Australian botanical landscape — source of Bush & Salt ingredients

Our Commitment

Made with the Land
in Mind.

Bush & Salt is built on Australian botanicals. The land that gives us our ingredients is the same land we have a responsibility to protect. This is how we try to live up to that.

We will not claim to be perfect. We will claim to be honest, improving, and unwilling to use sustainability as a marketing veneer while doing nothing substantial about it.

— The Bush & Salt Founding Principles

How We Operate

Our Six Commitments

01

Natural Origin, Always

Every ingredient in every Bush & Salt formula is of 100% natural origin. We do not use synthetic compounds, artificial fragrances, petroleum derivatives, PEGs, or microplastics. This is not a marketing position — it is the founding constraint of our formulation process. If it is not from a natural source, it is not in the formula.

  • 100% natural origin ingredients
  • No synthetic fragrance or parfum
  • No petroleum derivatives
  • No microplastics or microbeads

02

Responsible Sourcing

Our key Australian botanicals and minerals include Wattleseed, Lemon Myrtle, Kakadu Plum, and Murray River Pink Salt. Our Kakadu Plum is sourced exclusively from Indigenous community-governed suppliers in the Northern Territory, under fair-trade agreements that direct economic benefit back to the communities holding cultural knowledge of the plant. We do not appropriate — we partner.

  • Australian-grown key botanicals
  • Indigenous community-governed sourcing
  • Fair-trade agreements in place
  • Traceable supply chains

03

Minimal, Recyclable Packaging

Every packaging decision is made with end-of-life in mind. Our primary containers use recyclable PET jars and bottles, while our essential oils are packaged in glass. Secondary packaging uses responsibly sourced paper stock and low-impact printing methods. There is no polystyrene, no plastic fill, and no unnecessary secondary wrapping.

  • Recyclable PET containers
  • Glass bottles for essential oils
  • Responsibly sourced paper packaging
  • No polystyrene or plastic fill

04

Handcrafted in Small Batches

Every Bush & Salt product is made by hand in our Canberra workshop in deliberately small batches. Small-batch production means nothing sits in a warehouse for months, every batch can be checked before dispatch, and the person who formulates is the same person who pours. No factory floor. No outsourcing.

  • Small batch production only
  • Handcrafted in Canberra, Australia
  • No third-party manufacturing
  • Maximum 6-month post-production age at retail

05

Animal Welfare & Testing

No Bush & Salt product has ever been tested on animals. Our formulas are cruelty-free and safety assessed according to Australian cosmetic regulations. Most Bush & Salt formulas are vegan. However, the Renewal Body Scrub contains responsibly sourced Emu Oil, a traditional Australian ingredient valued for its skin-conditioning properties.

  • Never tested on animals
  • Majority vegan formulations
  • Responsibly sourced Emu Oil in Renewal Body Scrub
  • Third-party safety assessed

06

Reducing Our Footprint

We are not carbon-neutral — yet. We are measuring our production and logistics emissions and working toward meaningful offset. What we can control now, we control: material choices, local procurement where possible, packaging design, production volume, and the refusal to manufacture more product than the market needs.

  • Emissions measurement underway
  • Packaging redesign 2025–2026
  • Local procurement where possible
  • No overproduction buffer stock

Where It Comes From

Sourcing Transparency

We believe you should know where each key ingredient comes from. Below is our current sourcing information for the botanicals and minerals that define our formulas.

Kakadu Plum

Terminalia ferdinandiana

Northern Territory, Australia

Sourced from Indigenous community-governed suppliers in the Northern Territory under fair-trade agreements. These partnerships direct economic benefit back to the communities whose cultural knowledge of this fruit spans tens of thousands of years. We acknowledge that custodianship — and do not claim any aspect of it.

Murray River Pink Salt

Ancient saline aquifer deposit

Murray-Darling Basin, South Australia

Sustainably harvested from underground saline aquifers estimated to be between 1.5 and 2 million years old. Extracted without disrupting surface ecosystems, river flows, or coastal environments. The extraction site holds zero surface impact.

Wattleseed

Acacia victoriae

Semi-arid southern Australia & South Australia

Sourced from producers across the semi-arid regions of southern Australia. Wattleseed farming is a dryland agriculture practice that supports native vegetation corridors. We use Acacia victoriae specifically for its documented fatty acid and mineral profile — not as a token native ingredient.

Lemon Myrtle

Backhousia citriodora

Queensland, Australia

Harvested from certified plantations in subtropical Queensland. Plantation-grown, not wild-harvested — this protects native rainforest stands of Backhousia citriodora from commercial pressure. Each harvest is timed to peak citral content.

Eucalyptus Essential Oil

Eucalyptus radiata

New South Wales, Australia

Steam-distilled from certified organic Australian growers. GC/MS tested per batch to verify constituent ratios and confirm the absence of adulterants. No blending, no standardisation, no dilution.

Magnesium Flakes

Magnesium chloride

Australia

Sourced from Australian mineral suppliers and used for their purity and high solubility in bathing formulas.

We are committed to expanding this sourcing transparency to every ingredient in our range. If you have a specific question about an ingredient not listed here, please contact us at cs@bushandsalt.com.au.
