Australian Native Skincare Ingredients: The Complete Guide
Nine native Australian botanicals used in skincare — what each one does, where it grows, and how to tell provenance from marketing. A grower-to-jar guide.

The most widely used Australian native skincare ingredients are Wattleseed, Kakadu Plum, Lemon Myrtle, Kunzea, Eucalyptus, Macadamia oil, Australian pink and yellow clays, and Murray River pink salt. Each was selected by a landscape before it was selected by a formulator — which is the entire point, and the reason they behave differently from botanicals grown in gentler places.
Australia's plants evolved under conditions that would kill most flora: extreme ultraviolet exposure, ancient and mineral-depleted soils, drought cycles measured in decades. Plants that survive that do so by manufacturing their own defences — antioxidant compounds, protective phenolics, dense concentrations of the actives that make them useful in a jar.
This guide covers the nine botanicals at the heart of the Bush & Salt range: what each one is, where it comes from, what it does on skin, and how to read a label well enough to tell provenance from marketing.
Why Australian botanicals behave differently
Three things separate native Australian ingredients from the French and Korean botanicals that dominated ingredient lists a decade ago.
Environmental pressure. A plant that spends its life under high UV load and unreliable rainfall invests heavily in protective chemistry. Those same compounds — polyphenols, flavonoids, natural antioxidants — are what a formulator wants.
Depth of record. Many of these species have been used by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples for tens of thousands of years. That is not a marketing line; it is the longest continuous body of applied botanical knowledge on earth. We reference it with acknowledgement, and without claiming a medical outcome it was never making.
Supply chain visibility. Because the growing regions are domestic and small, provenance is traceable in a way that a generic "botanical extract" is not. We can tell you which state a batch of Wattleseed came from. Most global supply chains cannot.

The nine botanicals
Wattleseed (Acacia victoriae)
Grows: semi-arid regional Victoria and South Australia.
Roasted and ground Wattleseed is rich in amino acids, minerals and naturally occurring antioxidants. In a formula it does mechanical work — a gentle physical exfoliant with rounded particles rather than the sharp, fractured edges of nut shells, which are a common cause of micro-abrasion in cheaper scrubs.
The result is a polish that refines the look of skin texture without the scraped feeling that makes people abandon exfoliation entirely. It appears in the Renewal Body Scrub and the Nourishing Body Scrub.

Kakadu Plum (Terminalia ferdinandiana)
Grows: woodlands of the Northern Territory and northern Western Australia.
The highest known natural concentration of vitamin C of any fruit — commonly reported around 2,300–3,150mg per 100g of fresh fruit against roughly 53mg for an orange, so in the order of 40–60 times, with wide variation by provenance and season.12 It also carries gallic and ellagic acids, which contribute antioxidant activity independently of the vitamin C.1
On skin, vitamin C is associated with a brighter, more even-looking complexion. Worth knowing: whole-fruit extracts deliver vitamin C alongside supporting compounds rather than as an isolated, unstable active, which tends to make them better tolerated. Lemon Myrtle (Backhousia citriodora)
Grows: subtropical Queensland rainforest.
Among the highest natural citral concentrations of any plant — typically 90–98% of the essential oil, against roughly 2–3% in lemon oil.3 Citral is what gives Lemon Myrtle an aroma cleaner and more precise than lemon itself, without the sharpness of citrus peel oils.
Because it is potent, dilution is not optional. Well-made formulas use it at fractions of a percent. Central to Outback Botanica.

Kunzea (Kunzea ambigua)
Grows: Tasmania and coastal south-eastern Australia.
Often described as tea tree's gentler relative. The aroma is greener and less medicinal, and the oil is generally better tolerated on skin that reacts to Melaleuca. Steam-distilled from the foliage.
Eucalyptus (Eucalyptus radiata)
Grows: across temperate Australia.
E. radiata is deliberately chosen over the more common E. globulus. It is softer, lower in cineole, and far less likely to overwhelm a blend or irritate. If a product simply says "eucalyptus oil" with no species, that is a signal about how much attention went into sourcing.
Macadamia Oil (Macadamia integrifolia)
Grows: cold-pressed in Queensland.
Unusually high in palmitoleic acid — an omega-7 that also occurs in human sebum. Macadamia carries roughly 16–22%, the highest of the commercially available plant oils.4 That compositional similarity is the usual explanation for why it absorbs rather than sits, conditioning skin without the film left by heavier oils. It is the conditioning base across the scrub range.
Australian Clays — Pink, Yellow, Green
Sourced: mineral-rich deposits across the continent.
Three different clays doing three different jobs. Pink is the mildest, suited to skin that reacts easily. Yellow sits in the middle and is associated with a brighter-looking finish. Green is the most absorbent and best suited to skin that feels congested.
Colour is not decoration — it reflects genuinely different mineral compositions and absorbency.

Murray River Pink Salt
Harvested: saline aquifers of the Murray-Darling Basin.
Its apricot-pink colour comes from carotenoid-producing algae in the source water. The flakes are softer and dissolve faster than rock salt, which matters in a bath soak — undissolved salt on the floor of the tub is a formulation failure, not a feature.
How to read an Australian botanical label
Four checks that separate substance from styling.
1. Is the species named? "Eucalyptus" is a genus with more than 700 members with meaningfully different profiles. Eucalyptus radiata is a specification. "Eucalyptus" is a vibe.
2. Where does it sit in the ingredient list? Ingredients appear in descending order by weight down to 1%. A native botanical listed after the preservative is present in trace amounts — real, but not doing much.
3. Is provenance stated? Genuinely Australian-sourced ingredients get named regions, because that information is available and worth having. Vagueness usually means an imported extract.
4. Is "natural fragrance" hiding something? Fragrance is one of the more common causes of contact reactions — the European Union requires more than 80 individual fragrance substances, most of them constituents of essential oils, to be declared by name on cosmetic labels for that reason.5 A formula built on essential oils names them individually. One that says "fragrance" is not telling you.

Frequently asked questions
Kakadu Plum, Wattleseed, Lemon Myrtle, Macadamia oil, Australian clays, Kunzea, Eucalyptus, Tea Tree and Quandong. Kakadu Plum and Australian pink clay are the most widely used in commercial formulations.
Not categorically. They are distinctive — Australia's UV load and ancient soils produce plants with high concentrations of protective compounds — but formulation quality, inclusion rate and freshness matter more than origin alone. A well-made French botanical formula beats a poorly made Australian one.
It depends on the formula, not the origin. Essential oils are a common trigger regardless of where they were grown — many of the fragrance substances the EU requires to be individually labelled are natural essential-oil constituents.5 If your skin reacts easily, look for essential-oil-free formulations and patch test on your inner forearm for 24 hours before broader use.
Ask the brand directly, and expect a specific answer. Several native species — Kakadu Plum in particular — are wild-harvested by Indigenous communities, and fair supply arrangements matter to whether that harvesting continues to benefit those communities. Vague sustainability language is a poor substitute for a named supply chain.
Formulas without synthetic preservatives generally have shorter shelf lives. Check the period-after-opening symbol — the open jar icon with a number and "M" — and store products away from heat and direct light. Bathroom windowsills are the worst place in the house.
